Welcome to our 5th lesson! Today we are going to revise RELATIVE CLAUSES.

  • Para trabajar con Relative Clauses (Cláusulas Relativas) debemos conocer primero la palabras que nos sirven para unir las cláusulas y formar una nueva oración. 

  • Las cláusulas relativas se usan para identificar a un sustantivo en una cláusula principal.
Example: The man who / that works in that shop is French. 
                                       relative clause
                (El hombre que trabaja es ese negocio es Francés)
La cláusula relativa identifica al hombre del que se está hablando.

WHO / THAT:
Se usa WHO / THAT en vez del pronombre sujeto (I, you, he, she, it...etc) para hacer referencia a personas.
          
Example: That girl is from India. She lives next door.
                 The girl who / that lives next door is from India.

WHICH / THAT:
Se usa WHICH / THAT para hacer referencia a objetos o animales.

Example: The horse is black. It won the race.
                The horse which / that won the race is black.

WHOSE:
Se usa WHOSE en vez de los adjetivos posesivos (my, your, his, her, its, our, your, their) con personas, objetos y animales para indicar posesión.

Example: That's the man! His car was stolen.
                That's the man whose car was stolen.

                That's the bag. Its strap is broken.
                That's the bag whose strap is broken.

WHEN:
Se usa para hacer referencia al tiempo.

Example: 2014 was a great year, I went on a cruise that year.
                2014 was the year when I went on a cruise.

WHERE:
Es usado para hacer referencia a un lugar.

Example: That's the hotel I like. I spent my holidays there.
                That's the hotel where I spent my holidays.

WHY:
Se usa para dar razones.

Example: He had a fight with his best friend. He is sad for that.
                He had a fight with his best friend, that's why he's sad.

  • Ok, now let's practise!
1- Write sentences using the information given:
a- Dickens / man / wrote Oliver Twist.
    Dickens was the man who wrote Oliver Twist.

b- Columbus / discovered America.

c- Cleopatra / ruled Egypt.

d- A lion / animal / lives in the jungle.

e- A photocopier / machine / makes photocopies.

2- Match column A with column B to make correct sentences.

3- Fill in the gaps with WHO, WHY, WHERE, WHEN, WHICH or WHOSE.


4- Join the information in the two clauses into one sentence.

a- Max talked to a man. The man was from Canada.
    Max talked to a man who was from Canada.

b- Debbie is looking at the photo album. The photo album is mine.

c- Sharon was talking to a boy. The boy lives next door.

d- These are the people. Their daughter is a rock singer.

e- That's the dress. My mother bought me that dress.

f- That's the hospital. I was born there.

g- That's the ring. Sophie found it yesterday.
